Derrick grew up in Springfield, IL. He got started with baseball as a young kid, playing Little League alongside his older brother. He continued to play in high school and got a full-ride at the University of Illinois in Chicago. After graduating with a degree in English (2013), he was recruited into the minor leagues. Playing on a team in Minnesota wasn't the most ideal opportunity, but it allowed him to continue playing until he was finally drafted into the majors by the Cincinatti Reds (2015). Before he even got to play in his first season, he threw out his shoulder during Spring Training. After attempts at physical therapy failed, he went under the knife (early 2016). His shoulder is healing nicely, though he won't likely pitch again. He's been earning his injured pay by acting as third base coach until his contract is up and the team can cut him loose.
